I just got most of my stereo put back in my truck last night and found that I had some alternator whine through the front speakers. I messed around with grounds and nothing seemed to help.
Today I bought a ground loop isolator and put it in. Alternator whine went away, but so did the output to the front speakers.
Anyone have any ideas on what I can do to get music back through the fronts?

Thanks.

are you sure you installed the ground loop isolator correctly? it shouldn't cut out like that

ya you probably reversed the loop.. make sure input is the input. [Wink]
ive dont that before.... the way they RCA ends are setup is kinda stupid if ya ask me! i think they need to be reversed...
but you can always just get some adaptors at radioshack to easily change the plugs to what you need

The one I have is two sets of male ends with the isolator in the middle. I've tried flipping the ends around, but I still didn't get any sound.

Is it possible that the front speaker wires are affected by a power wire nearby(door lock/window?) ? If you are using factory speaker wires, that's one big possiblity that noise is being picked up by a higher powered system than factory, so change the wires. try moving the speaker wires away from other wires.

All the wires except for the HU ground and power have been changed. The way things are set up now, the RCAs are kinda close to the amp's power wires (within 2 inches), but they don't touch. It doesn't seem to matter where I put the wires, it still doesn't make sound.

Or if you grounded them try ungrounding them... Also agree GLI could be bad.

I'm not sure what you mean by ground wires coming out of it, but here's what it look like.

I'll see if I can find another GLI tonight and see if it changes anything.

Alright, today I've been messing around with stuff and found that if I move the ground wire on the deck the noise gets quieter, but doesn't dissapear.
I grounded the wire to where the amps are grounded and that seems to help the best. The wire I was using is about 2 1/2' long, but that was the shortest piece that would reach. I know you're supposed to have a short ground, but how long could I get away with? To wire it in with the amps so it's not over the seat it'd have to be around 6' long. Is that too long for a ground? Would I be better off just running it to the battery (it's a shorter distance)?

Thanks for the help guys.

I would try running the ground from your head unit back to your amplifier

Could do multipul grounds. To the battery and amp. To much ground is never a bad thing.

i just wanted to add that it is just a myth about the RCA's and the power wire being close to each other or touching it will not hurt anything and it will not cause noises

Just like to start with saying thanks to everyone that replied for the help. I've found the noise, but it's the deck itself. Swapped mine out for a friend's last night and the noise went away. I guess this is the incentive I needed to finally get that new one I've been needing for a while. Thanks again.

its not just a myth, directional or decent rcas usually filter everything like that out, but sometimes with cheaper wiring having them closer hurts =)
