I've installed a Sony CD head unit that doesn't accept dimmer or
illumination wires from my Nissan Maxima. I'd like the clock to dim and the
back lighting for my MPH and RPM gages to function when I turn on my
headlights. What should I do? I'm not using a pre-fab wire harness.
Thanks!

This is just a guess, so you might want to get another opinion, but here it goes.

Hook up the factory radio and find the wire that is hot w/ the headlights turned on. Unhook it from radio and run it to the fuse box. Check to see if your dash or gauges fuse is hot with headlights on. If yes then connect the wire to that fuse. That should light up your tach and speedo. As for your radio...I don't think you can dim the display.

Once again, I have never installed a system in a Maxima, so please get a second opinion before your do anything. Try going to a Nisaan dealer...they probably run into this thing all the time - and they have wiring diagrams for the car!

I'm not positive cuz It's been a while since I crawled around cars for a living, but I seem to remember either Nissan or Mazda having, essentially, an illumination 'in' and 'out' to the deck and if they were left disconnected you had no dash lights....

Maybe someone has more recent info?

Yes Dukk, some of those Nissan's were series lights. Only the entry level cars, the sentra and stanza. I dont the the colors off the top of my head, but you should prolly forget about dimming your radio with your dash lights. In all the years I was installing professionally, I think I hooked it up twice, and both times were in my personal cars!

STILL waiting to hear a GOOD pair of HLCD's!!

If it dont fit, force it... if it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway...
