I don't think a '96 Monte has a factory amp. Meter all your power leads and check the fuses. Just having a factory amp wouldn't cause the deck not to power up, you'd just not get any sound. Did you use a wiring kit or hard wire? Sounds like you did something wrong or grounded a wire (even temporarily) when hooking it up.

there are two ways of doing this without running wire. a> use the remote turn on the deck and hook it to the power antenna wire on your harness, if that doesnt work take a basic line fuse ( 1amp) run wires off it put one end to the switched power and then from there on test the wires with that wire until the factory amp turns on, in chevy its usually a pink or orange wire. this method is to use the factory amp withn the new head unit.
b> to bypass the amp first you need to locate it. once the amp is located then you can proceed to test your wires from there. test for all the power wires on the amp once you have found those seperate them from the rest of the wires. now the rest of your wires left are going to include your input wires coming from the deck and the output wires going into your speakers. grap a D battery and attach a wires to either end of the battery by soldering them. then and the end of each wire use a spade cut half the spade off so that the tip will be able to fit into a harness plug. once you have that done up proceed to put one of the ends into a harness slot and leave it there then use the other end and try slot to slot until you hear the speaker pop. in otherwords your popping your speakers to find the wires.( if you cant figure out how to do this go to a professional) once your found every speaker then just attach them to the other 8 wires you see at the deck the same wires should be at the amp

I wouldn't mess around with a battery in any car with airbags........Don't use the "trial and error" method. If you can't figure it out, take the car to a shop, it'll save you money in the long run. I can't count the number of output ICs I've changed in head units due to improper install, not to mention the potentially disasterous (and dangerous) damage to the vehicle. It's just not worth it!

well neways in a nut shell, there is a harness you can buy that combine the wires coming from the dash into the factory amp with the wires coming off the other side of the amp so it takes the factory amp outta the loop, the wire coming from the dash to the amp is a little thin tho from what i've seen like a 22 ga. but the harnes is maybe 10-15 bucks
