I have a Memphis PRK1D amp and its running at 1 ohm pumpin out 1000 watts rms. Its 90% efficient.
After just a couple minutes of Numba 1 Stunna or any other song with bass, the amp gets pretty hot. Not hot hot but pretty warm. Its getting plenty of ventilation and all the connections are good.
I thikn that when the bass lines hit the amp needs more current to producec the power so it draws more strain on the battery which causes more strain on the amp which causes excess heat?
Any other possibilities???

amps can't get hot from lack of power. The get hot from passing power though it. Do you have any problems? Or are you just worried about the heat?

i seriously doubt that im giving too much power to the amp
im worried like crazy about the heat cuz the last amp i had did this and shorted in a few months
just tonite i got home from work...a 5 minute drive with just a little thump and it was scolding hot...i couldnt leave my hand on it for more than a second or so
i really wanna solve the problem!

hmm what subs do you have...maybe you are running the ohms down too low...also he didn't mean you were 'giving your amp too much power' he meant you had it turned up too loud, causing the amp to push itself really hard, and overheat. think of it as a fat man running track...gets warm real quick from being pushed hard.

The amp is 1 ohm stable and at 1 ohm puts out 1000 watts RMS x 1 channel. Monoblock subwoofer amp. I have 2 Memphis STudio Dual 4 ohm 10 inch subs rated at 200 rms per coil. The subs are wired into 1 0hm. I know they are correct b/c I watched the guys wire them. I was afraid to mess it up.
It heated up when I played it for a little over 3 5-8 minutes with minimal bass and minimal volume. Im still 'breaking them in' like the guys reccommend. The gain is on a little under 1/2, which is nominal, right?
I havent bumped it hardcore yet. The guys at the store had a truck with these 2 studio 10's, same 10s as I got, and the gain is cranked on full and the subs are gettin 600 rms a peice and he has had them running like that for a year withough problems. Its been 3 days and my amp is like fire. I dont get it.
