I have a set of jbl gti 12's, powered by a earthquake 1000bx. I had the subs in a 1.35ft^3 per chamber box. when i turn the stereo up past 20 (HU goes to 40)On some notes, the subs make a nasty popping noise. I have been told to check where the metal basket mounts to the wood, I run a bead of silicone down before installing the sub to get a better seal. (No metal on wood.) Any suggestions as to why my subs would make a popping noise like this when i crank up my system?
Thanks
Steven

too big a box; gains not set properly; bass boost(s) up too high; subs could have permanant damage; could be a short in speaker wire; amp could be cooked med-rare; short in rcas; short in your xover. these are some of the things that could cause what your experiencing

Subs are new, just refurbed. They tested them on a signal generator, i have the gains on the amps turned down, (tried two amps, xtant 121m, and earthquake 1000bx) i just recently purchased new rca's. I will be installing them soon. Hopefully this will cure the problem. Any other suggestions? I have an audio control eqx, an epicenter, and a pioneer headunit if that helps.

Does it do it with the epicenter turned off?

The epicenter can overdrive subs at lower freq. VERY easily, if set to high.

It definately sounds to me like you are overdriving the subs. Even though your gains are down, the other components in you system can work as a line driver, and still push the amp hard, even at volume 20.

When i first got the subs back i had them connected to an xtant 121m (250 x 1) an mtx 3 way crossover, in a sealed box. The subs made the popping noise with this amp, gain was below half way. Then i went ported, with an earthquake 1000. I have all gains all the way down, untill i install my new alt/battery. The epicenter is turned off, and the bass boost on the crossover/eq is turned down to -3db. The rca's are about two years old and are about 6 feet too long, so i bought new ones that are the proper length. Any other suggestions? Oh, i also have tried two head units and no change.

Bottom line is that you are bottoming out your subs. double check your box for the correct tuning frequency and volume.
