Well I think it is blown. There is a scraping sort of noise like something is rubbing inside the v/c when you push the cone up and down. Is this blown? There was no smoke or smell in the box. If it is blown, how did this happen? I wasn't doing anything too harsh. Just a 50hz sine wave (at moderate volume of course) and then all of a sudden it sounded crap. Could this be a fault in the woofer? Do ID give warranty? BTW I measured DC resistance of the vc and it is still 3.4ohms Posts: 6 | From: Sydney, Australia | Registered: May 2000

Welcome to the forum, I talked to you a couple times on the SD forum since you have a Silvia/240sx if I remember correctly. It sounds like the vc is rubbing somewhere. You could have torn the spider a little bit and it is letting the vc move enough to rub somewhere.
Nah, the spider and its movement looks ok. More than likely something has come undone inside the v/c. Get this, if I play around with the tension on the mounting screws (some tight - some loose) it sounds almost normal agian. But obviously this is not acceptable and I am calling ID on monday.
How is your install going? Finished? I remember you were saying about the kicks in these cars how you have to move the computer and fuse panel.
Well I have moved the computer and all its wiring. Not too hard, did it in a couple of hours. Just modified the factory bracket that holds it so it fits neatly under the glove box.
Looking at the fuse panel side now. Dosen't look that much harder. Any tips for me before I begin?
One thing I know I will have problems with now is that to have the speaker truly on-axis and stop them from sticking out further than the factory kick, I will probably have to cut some metal from the footwell/pillar area. I am a little reluctant to do this and may settle for slightly off-axis.
You probably didn't experience this with your Illusions. But these Focal are built like mini subs.

My install finished? No a couple montys ago I moved halfway across the country for a new job and haven't worked on the car since. The fuse panel might be able to moved up under the dash, in my car the keyless entry/alarm brain was in the way. I just moved everything as far up and out of the way as possible, taped over everything and laid fiberglass over it to form the back of the enclosure. It was pretty easy because of the Illusions, but a pair of ID chameleons fit in my kicks too and they are built pretty sturdy.

You may have warped the speaker while installing it, or it may have been beat on in shipping....Just a possibility.

Definitly blown .. This will happen when the voice coil overheats and actually deforms in the gap . Thats the scraping noise you hear . The only thing i can say is either it was overpowered , sent a clipped signal or was put in a less than optimum enclosure will all cause this .
