today i hardwired a tom tom gps in an 06 chevy cobalt. i ran a wire for power to an unused fuse port that actually turned on and off with the key. this fuse was in the interior fuse panel at the console passenger side kickpanel. i put a fuse in line as well. the tom tom turns on fine. the doors were open for about 45 minutes while i did this install. i unplugged nothing and pulled no fuses. i simply ran my power and ground wire (i grounded around the fuse panel on a bolt which grounded nothing else. the accessory power for the car is all good, all lights and everything work...however...THE CAR WONT START!!!!! i have no idea what could have happened. the battery reads 12.9 volts at stand still, the headlights are bright as can be. there is no security light on that i can see. the car will not even make an attempt to crank. i used a couple methods i heard of for resetting gm keys, but nothing worked. the key has a positive (+) symbol on it up by the head in a circle. does anyone have any tips on what could have happened to this car? a friend is going to use his scanner on it tomorrow to try and diagnose a problem. it is still in the bay. again, before this problem, i messed with no ignition wires or anything other than the fuse port.

disconnect your power source to the gps and see if it helps. when you try to crank it is the security light flashing right after? Is it in park all the way?

Put the key in it and turn it to the on position for 10 min. turn it off then try to start it. I have had issues where the veh. goes into theft mode after so long. Does the security light flash while you are trying to start it? if so put the key in the ignition and turn it on and let it set for atleast ten min. that will reset the security system.

turns out this was a freak accident. it wasnt a security issue at all. when i grounded the cable for the gps to its own ground, i apparently just barely caught a wire around the fuse box. even when i unscrewed the ground, i could not see it, but the wire was pinched enough that it grounded out and shorted. obviously, it started the car $5 in parts to fix, $180 in labor. AAA tow to the shop. wow. i am an idiot.

thanks for that tips as well blakes, i just learned it yesterday as well when i tried everything on this earth to start the car. apparently, nothing other than a new wire was going to start it. i dont know how i pinched a factory wire. lesson learned.
