Hey im new to car stereo systems. I own a 1988 Mazda 323 DX. I put in a Alpine deck with 4 speakers (one in each corner), and in the hatchback i have a phenoix gold octane-r amp with 2 10" subs. All the wiring was done by a friend i have that works at the stereo shop. The problem im having is that my battery dies between a week and a month after putting it in. I know that the amp is switched. Anyone able to help point me in the right direction?

sry i described the batterys condition wrong. The batteries ive been using are an ACDelco battery with a 5 year warranty. I talked with my dad about it and he said that the batteries are being made unable to hold a charge. its not that the batteries are just needing a charge.

you know if you drive around all day(escpially when its cold) with the radio blasting then just park for the night your battery may just be completely drained,(then maybe killing your battery) i had that problem with a geo metro, the alt. could not keep up with a 1200 watt system and a battery.

your alternator is a 60 amp max. your car would probley use 40 amps or so, so you only have 20 amps or so for your amp the rest is off your battery. maybe a second battery or a ho alternator.

how would a second battery work? i mean what does having a second battery do? I dont drive all that much.... just to and from work (which is like 3km each way) but i do have it cranked all the time. my amp is 750 watts which is going to the 2 subs. Also i was told that putting in a red top battery and then running the same gauge ground wire i have for the amp for the battery would help the problem. Does that make sence?

Unhook all the stereo equipment for about a week and see if the battery continues to die. It may be a car issue and not a stereo issue.

i second that, might be a short, true those baterys are not the greatest, but they should not die that quick, back when i had my trunk i had stock everything about about 1000 total watts rms playing through there never had to replace teh battery once

3x have you taken it out of the circuit yet?

When you suddenly have a problem the first question MUST be "what changed?" Well you had a knowledgeable friend install a stereo and you know what, even experts make mistakes.

Next take a DMM to the fuse box and see if something is drawing power after the key is out of the ignition (glove box or trunk light etc.)

Use a dc amp clamp on the wiring comming off the positive batter post. If it reads start removing fuses or power leads to audio equipment one at a time until the draw goes away then trace that cicuit using a wiring diagram. If the DC clmap doesnt read a draw, disconnect the positive lead of the battery and connect a good DMM in series witht he battery and positive batt cable or audio wiring and set it to milliamps. Check with your local dealer to find the acceptable milliamp draw for your car. Some are 0 and other like cadillac allow upto 50 milliamps of parasitic draw. Constant deep discharge will quickly destroy a standard battery.
