I'm doing an installation in a friend's car. The components in question are the following:
HeadUnit: DVA-9965
5Ch Amp: MRA-D550
Mono Amps: PDX-1.1000 x2

The problem I have is that the sub isn't playing.
The headunit is hooked up to the MRA by an optical cable and the ai-net cable. Then the mono sub output on the MRA goes into one of the PDXs using a y-splitter for left and right. Then the output of that PDX goes into the input of the other PDX.

When I play test CDs, only the interior speakers play, and they sound fine. The subwoofer isn't moving at all though. There is a turn-on thump that kicks through the sub when the system comes on though.

I'm not sure if there's some setting on the horrendous user interface for the headunit/MRA amp that needs to be switched, or what. I spent about an hour stumbling through the user manual and the user interface, trying to see if there was some magic setting that would make the sub play.

The second question I have is how to set the amps to the one sub. I have one amp on each voicecoil right now. From my understanding, is I leave them hooked up to the sub at a low gain, and then use a multimeter across the connects, set to measure AC voltage, and slowly turn the gains up, making sure that the output voltages of each match up. Is this correct?

is the 5 channel amp set on hi pass or full for the components? try switching it to low pass to see if the sub will turn on.the 5 channel amp may be cutting out the low freq for the sub

One of the problems is that it's really hard to find the correct settings through the headunit. The manual isn't really documented well. It's hard to find what you're looking for. Does anyone have experience w/ this headunit/MRA amp combo? The interface is really unintuitive.

I was trying to see if there's some high/low pass setting, but I can't find it as of yet. The only setting I've found so far is Subwoofer -> ON. hahaha

The sub wiring is correct, and the PDX amps' gains are set to around 50%. I'm going to play with it a little tomorrow.

Does anyone have any insight as to how to correctly set up this headunit? It has way too many settings, and some of the settings are too dumbed down as well. I'm an avid of KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid. I'd take a Clarion 9255 over this thing in a heartbeat.

I haven't fixed the problem. Some other problems came up that I have to fix first... [Frown]

Yeah, these Alpine menus are absurd.

not sure exactly what ur problem is.
but what is your volt rating on ur head unit.not sure if u want to be using 50% of ur gains.50% on most amps would send a clipped signal and higher volumes.if u need more details let me know
what does it say on ur gains is it rated in volts

Have you tried playing a DVD? Maybe the sub only works when there is an LFE signal present? I was looking at a setup like this because the H/U & amp combo are on sale for $500 now. The amp manual is a joke.....but the HU manual has the answers.

Looks like defeat needs to be turned on in the H/U to adjust the sub options on the processor in the amp.

1 Press the Rotary encoder (MODE) repeatedly to
choose the desired mode.
Each press changes the mode as follows:
SUBWOOFER*1 → BALANCE → FADER → DEFEAT →
VOLUME → SUBWOOFER*1
Subwoofer : 0 ~ +15
Balance : L15 ~ R15
Fader : R15 ~ F15
Defeat : ON/OFF
Volume : 0 ~ 35
Press g or f after selecting the Subwoofer mode,
and the subwoofer output phase is switched NORMAL
(PHASE 0°) or REVERS (PHASE 180°).
• If the Rotary encoder (MODE) is not pressed within 5 seconds
after selecting the BALANCE, FADER, DEFEAT or SUBWOOFER
mode, the unit automatically returns to normal mode.
• If you set the 2WAY/3WAY switch (pages 68, 69 and 71) to 3WAY,
you cannot adjust the FADER mode.
*1 When the subwoofer mode is set to OFF, its level and phase cannot
be adjusted.
2 Turn the Rotary encoder (MODE) until the
desired sound is obtained in each mode.
By setting Defeat ON, previously adjusted settings of EQ
will return to the factory defaults and MX is turned off.
• If an external audio processor is connected, refer to “External
Audio Processor (Optional)” (pages 45 to 53)

Also check the input gain selector switch setting on both sub amps. I couldn't find anywhere that lists the output voltage of the sub out on the 5ch but I'm guessing it's 4v like a lot of Alpine stuff.

scout62, that's freaking awesome info. Thanks a billion man. I'll try it out tomorrow and hopefully soon I'll be able to bid this headunit and car adieu!

check to make sure that the amps are wired in phase. if the polarity on one of the amps is backwards it will completly cancel out, therefore no sound on subs. also make sure that the sub amps are getting an audio signal.

It ends up the sub box was wired wrong [Embarrassed]

Then the output was really low so I thought I might have damaged something. My friend drove the car to Vegas, and he said it got louder and louder on the way over there and he didn't know how to turn the sub down and said he felt deaf when he got there [Big Grin] I forgot that amps put out fractions of their rated wattage at lower voltages, and that the battery was flat.

Thanks for all the help guys!
