I am installing a system for a friend. I can't find any information on his W4 12 inch subs he has. We need some box information. The dimensions we have to work with is 38 inches wide and only 10 3/4 inches tall. So either the subs will have to pointed up or down or the front be extremely angles to fit the subs in. As for depth...pretty much anything goes...it can't be too big or it won't fit in the trunk. Give me some ideas. What box is good for w4's? sealed or ported? What air space? He wants it to sound good...he has plenty of power. A punch 200ix I think. Thanks.

From personal experience with 10W4s: go small sealed. If you put them in a ported box and give them anything near their rated power, you'll have shot voice coils on your hands, not to mention disappointing performance. They are /not/ a durable speaker.
A small sealed box is a little safer. My 10W4s call for 1.27cuft or so, but are best in 1.0 or less (from my experience and advice from others with more experience).
I can't give you a definite recommendation for 12W4s, but I'd stay under 1.5cuft, if not close to 1.0.

I'd say go with a sealed around 1.25ft^3 for each if you don't have the specs on them. 1.25 is a nice sized box for most 12's. Not to big and not too small.

You can NEVER port a box if you don't know the specs on the subs. This could cause problems with how they perform since tuning and box size is so important and has to be done right with the specs.

JL subs are a very good sub. The 12W4 works best in about 1.25 cubic feet as Patric said. You can go as small as 1 cube but don't go any less. If you go below 1.25 use some fill. And they do work great in ported boxes. I put one of my old 12W4D4's in my brothers honda accord in 2 cubes ported on 300W and it sounds great. The suround is starting to show fatigue. However the sub was almost 2 years old when I gave it to him and gets pounded every day now that he has it. You all know how you are when you get your first sub....

I just found one of the actual W4 data sheets, and have a couple of notes: JL recommends 1.25cuft for the 12W4-D4 sealed. For a ported enclosure (which they do give specs for), they recommend 2.00cuft, with a 3"x8.1" port. [per driver]
And my number on the 10W4 box size was the wrong one -- that was the ported size.
