can you blow a sub by having it pressed against a seat back? the box i'm looking at for my pickup is going to fit, but it'll be right against the seat back. the crutchfield guy sez it's no problem, but i'm not going to go on his word alone. any comments/ideas?

thanks

Are you going to push it hard? If the woofer has a long excusion it will hit the back seat . It might not blow the sub but it won't good. Install a spacer around the sub...a piece of 3/4" mdf or plywood will do.

i'm not doing spl or anything. it's a 8" RF xlc pushed by a bridged punch 40.2 (80 RMS bridged). so nothing big. the box has a grill on it, so i'd guess it'd hit the grill first before it hit the seat back. i was more worried about lack of air movement or something?!?

it will sound ok, my friend has 1 small 12" punch enclosure with a grill powered by a power 150a1 inside a cavalier, up against of the back of the trunk. In a pickup, you should actually get a better sound than he does. but i wouldn't expect miracles.

I have used so many different combos behind my truck seat I know all about it... It won't effect sound unless someone is sitting in the seat in front of the sub, then it will be a bit more quiet... Thats about it man...

hey guys,

thanks for all the input. it's going behind my driver's seat, so i've opted to not go for the crutchfield box. i finally found a shop in town that'll do the sub and box for like 150 bucks. this way i can get them to do a ported box with enough inside area and enough clearance behind the seat back. jw what did you find for subs that sounded best behind a seat? i'm going with a rf punch xlc as of now.

thanks,

~erik

It will sound fine. I had two 12" on 225 watts each blowin right into the back panel of my seat, and they were fine. The problem with that is not really your subs hitting the seat, but the panel rattling like crazy.
I removed the panel(I have an '88 F-150, so it was just a peice of cheap wood) and now the subs blow right through the seat, and there's really no constriction. I can't notice a sound difference but it does rattle a lot less.
