I am wanting to try to put a recone kit on 1 of my old subs but don't understand about "shims". Where do you get them and what are they exactly for? Also, what is a good glue to use??

the shims you refer to are what you put around the center pole of the sub and the new voice coil goes around the shim.you can use pretty much what ever you want some people us business cards but i like to use manila folders that you cut into strips that are wide enough to wrap around the pole at least once around then you just keep wraping them around the pole until the voice coil fits tight around the shims. the main goal is to have the coil the same distance from the pole all the way around good thing to remember is to cut the shim wide enough for it to stick up past the cone so you dont forget to pull it out before you put the dust cap on. as far as glue for the dust cap and surrond you use a rubber glue something like shoe-goo sorta like rubber cement the spider needs a plastic CA glue it is usually black make sure you use accelarator on it and let it dry before use.

Item number: 360011975181 on ebay is what im looking at and to me it looks like 2 pieces, v.c. is already attached to the cone/spider and the dust cap is the 2nd piece. Am i wrong? If i am right, how hard would this recone kit be to build my old HE???

as long as it the right recone for the sub then your golden you will need glue but other than that your good.the dusst cap is the last thing to go on that stays off until the end so you can get to the shims that center the voice coil and remove them before gluing the dust cap down.

The coil slides over the center pole on the motor use the shims to have the correct and even space all the way around between the pole and the inside of the voice coils if this is not done correctly it will cuase the voice coil to rub on the motor and wear a chunk out of the voice coil! ( That is bad!)

if you dont have any loctite blackmaxx go to ur local hardware store and pick up 3 glues for a recone.
gorilla super glue it is rubber toughened and works great. this is for gluing spiders together, spiders to basket, cone to former.

next is goop this is the best for foam surrond to basket and dust cap to cone.

last 5 min epoxy you mix up 3/4oz and puddle around the top of the cone to the former joint...
