why do everybody build boxes out of 3/4 mdf instead of plywood? is there that big of a difference?

Unless its birch plywood I wouldnt use it. MDF is the golden standard pretty much because it's pretty acoustically dead and not expensive really.

I think the main advantage of birch plywood is light weight, they're widely used for pro audio speaker enclosures. I've used MDF since day one, it works well and it's cheap.
But nothing is as solid as concrete boxes...

Yea, and birch has better 'bite' for the screws. After this last enclosure I like birch quite a bit

nine layers of 3/4 " birch (actually .7") fits the outside diameter of a 6" piece of pvc pipe 6.3" exactly......I always laminate with resign and hardner and screw together while still wet. roughly two sheets of birch weigh the same as one mdf.

I would use nothing less than 7ply birch. I love 11ply but the problems I've had is when cutting birch, it likes to splinter if you're not careful or have a fine tooth blade. I normaly run a strip of masking tape along the cut line so it doesn't splinter

my father in law owns a cabinet shop we got a cnc to cut everything out no splinters!

i prefer to use birch, but usually use MDF...but with people complaining about box prices, i may have to switch to gluing layers of cardboard together for em.
