Blowed my subs a couple weeks ago. Manufacturer says I did not "blow' them but separated the cone due to over excursion. How do I control this so it won't happen again as it will not be covered under warranty.

Turn the gain down some on the amp. Try putting the sub in a smaller size enclosure too.

Right I mean most legit manufacturers as long as you bought them from a dealer will cover anything once under warranty. And yes I agree you need to turn the gain down on your amp or your overall volume, but even very experienced listeners can blow some sh#t up by accident. And for as much as those subs cost they can afford to eat a pair every now and again. I mean I worked In a service department in a retail store carrying some big brands mtx, memphis etc.and they all would cover everything besides throwing the woofer in the lake and letting your dog bring it back! And they might even cover that once!

I have seen this many times with DD subs.
No i dont think its necessarily anything wrong with how it was used. These subs are suppose to be solid.
And no DD has horrid customer service said to say. Seems nothing is their fault even when they openly admit to changing the way they glued the former joint and had many failures, then went back to the old way. Then when i encountered these exact issues at this time they wouldnt take responsibility for it, despite them publicly admitting they were faulty. To this day i dont understand that.

there is NO perfect sub.

they need to fix it without question design flaw or bad glue joint.

how much power are you running.

i knew a guy that designed alot for big name co's and he would rate the power by a 1hr freeair test. if it handled 1000rms on the bench for an hr without failure it would be rated at 1000rms.

Well, this is my first real setup with subs other than Kicker or Memphis. Never had any warranty issues until now. Most people who saw these subs said it looked like glue failure, but what I am to do? DD says it's basically my fault.
I'll pay this time but I don't want to have it happen again so that's why I posted this topic.

I was running 1 Stetsom 7kd at the time and burping at 57hz.
I'm very pleased with the peformance of the subs. I just don't want to keep messing them up.

Hey JD, glad to hear form you. Like I said, I'm very impressed with the subs and I know I'm using them in a manner they are not really designed for. I just want to know how to control it as to not happen again. Street guys run big power all the time. I'm not the first so what did I do wrong?

Well looks like I will be upgrading to the Kevlar. DD says I won't have problems with those. Expensive, but I'll see.

JD, please pm me what you have(suggest)that would work in my setup. 2 12's running(soon to be) 4 Memphis 4kw's burp only.

Did you get a good look at what broke on the woofer? was it the paper cone itself or the sheathing of glue off of the former/paper piece?

Hate for you to spend a bunch of money on some other issue... [Confused]

Not to knowledgeable about subs but from what we saw, the cone just came loose from the basket and tore the surrounds.

So the surround around the outside came undone?
Not in the middle under the dust cap?

Make sure you "brush up" on your knowledge of speakers...

With what you are doing... it is good to know the ins and outs of subwoofers so you don't throw a bunch of money down the toilet.....

I learned as I went too my friend! [Smile]

If the surround came undone due to "over excursion" on a paper cone that did not fold... your problem will be worse with Kevlar cone...

This is if what you are describing is accurate.

I'm only able to go by what DD had told me.
They said that I did fold the cone. Physically one sub looked fine unless you pulled on the dust cap to see the separation. The other sub actually tore the surround.
When burping, the subs were trying to come out the box which is why I was told I had to much excursion.
I just want to learn how to reduce that(freq., enclosure, port, etc).
Also, I want to make the right decision (kevlar or not) before paying to have them rebuilt.

Cool...
Yeah if the cone softens and folds over the surround will tear... probably the case.

Also if it is just the surround tearing.. it will worsen with a stiffer cone...

Guess you will find out which it was!

Alot of the "CRX" and "SPL" style ported boxes are designed to specifically throw the woofer to full excursion...

Also, If you play a frequency below one of these said boxes... it is dirt nap time for woofer.

Goodluck!
