I bought a Fi BTL 18 a while back and I'm finally ready to buy another one. When I bought the first one, the inner heat sink option wasn't available and now it is. What is it anyways, and what does it do? Should I buy with that option this time around, or leave it off so that both subs are identical?

BTL's are not the same now, the new ones are being made...so they won't match regardless.
Its a machined aluminum ring in the gap that lowers the voicecoils inductance (allowing it to play up higher and have a little better overall transient response). It also reduces the volume inside the magnet gap of the motor increasing air speed with the cooling as well as allowing the coil to kick off heat to a more receptive thermal mass than magnets...

I knew I should've waited until I could buy both at the same time!!!! SO my best bet is to sell it and buy a pair of new ones???

so the inner heatsink option is really just an aluminum shorting ring?

probably not quite as commonly in true highpowered spl woofers. They can cause a slight dip in the BL curve, or average motor force. But anyone who is using them isn't just putting them in for now reason. For SQ and highend home drivers, very common for them to be used to balance the inductance from the x- stroke
