Too much to redesign? cost? already have a ton of surrounds and just change something simple with the cone to make it a little different each year? The tall ones usually look better I think. I think audiobahn when i see the fat wide ones.

if you think looks are what is important, then maybe audiobahn is you sub of choice. There are many reasons as too why they are not used.

not a looks thing at all just curious why some companys use thin/tall vrs fat wide? cost has to be more on the taller thinner due to larger cone and not as many out there.
half of the surrond is considered cone area.
audiobahn has nothing on the ol 3" eclipse surrond on the Ti and Ti pro, lol.
i am just asking dont anybody get offended,please...

i thought most companies considered only the inner 1/3 of the surround when calculating Sd.

There is also less coil rock on a standard type surround than on a tall thin one.
The cone area thing is largely a fallacy as on the shallower surrounds a good portion of the surround is helping output. I have also heard that the wider surrounds do a better job of coupling when placed close together but I Hav no Idea if that's true.
The main reason for a taller surround is increased excursion whereas the main reason for the short surround is more linear controll. My guess is that somewhere in the middle is probably the best compromise and is probably why it is also the most popular.
My question is materials used. Is there some reason more companies don't use rubber instead of foam?
I love the rubber surrounds my favorite has to be the Acoupower surround it seems to be the most thought out surround I have seen.

rubber surrond i dont like because tempeture effects it where foam is always the same.

Which probably isnt a problem in the car audio market, were the average lifespan of someone's equipment is around 6 months or much much less due to operator stupidity.
