is it important to seal the inside edges with silicone? I would think its not necessary since air would just take the route of least resistance, the port. I know that for sealed boxes it's almost a necessity.

Seal it up with silicone. Yes, the port will shuttle alot of the air out, but there is still a lot of pressure inside.
