I'm sure I with everyone else on here in school write a lot of papers on the subject when we can make it fit the assignment guidelines. I'd like to get a thread started about all the various research into car audio competition. I'm interested in more advanced knowledge on the subject but I'm sure even basic information would be valueable to me and others. Possible topics: Techniques used to gain SPL, specifically how its measured, how equipment functions, soundwaves, formulas, sound in general etc. If anyone has links to SPL research please post. I save everything on my computer i come across that is interesting or things I dont know about car audio, if this post gets going i'll get my other computer out of the garage and post everything I have on it.

thanks,
Ron

I did one once back in ENG 1002 at LSU it was a satirical essay, it basically said how not to do car audio competitions. I 'll see if I can find it and post it.

KEEP IN MIND I WORK AT A STEREO SHOP AND THAT ALL SHOPS ARE NOT BAD, THIS ESSAY REFLECTED A BAD EXPERIENCE I HAD AT A LOCAL SHOP BEFORE I LEARNED HOW TO DO THINGS MYSELF AND THE IDEA OF THIS ESSAY WAS SATIRE. I IN NO WAY DISCOURAGE PEOPLE FROM GOING TO LOCAL SHOPS, MANY OF THEM DO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND CAN HELP YOU OUT TREMENDOUSLY. I WORK AT A SHOP AS DO MANY PEOPLE ON HERE AND ALMOST ALL SHOPS HAVE AT LEAST ONE GOOD GUY WILLING TO HELP AND GIVE HONEST ADVICE NOT JUST WHATS GOING TO FILL HIS POCKETS THE MOST. ENJOY THE ESSAY.
How to win an SPL contest
The mobile electronics industry is growing larger each day. A new sport is growing within this industry. Sound Pressure Level (SPL) contests are held all over the world to see just who has the loudest vehicle. There are many things a person can do to make their vehicle louder than another’s. Soon you too will know the secrets to winning a SPL competition.
First, one should go out and buy the most expensive equipment they can get. After all the more it costs the better it will be. Even you, the competitor, have no idea how to use the equipment or what it is capable of, if it costs more than $1000, it simply must be a sure fine way to win. Do not buy flea market brands like Resonant Engineering, Digital Designs, Adire Audio, Shocker, or Elemental Designs. After all if the local stereo shop does not sell the speakers and has no knowledge of their existence, they must be garbage. The number one rule when preparing to compete is to understand that the local salesman knows everything there is to know about car audio and competition and can never be wrong about anything. Always go with what the local salesman says is going to be best for your car. Never disagree with him or give your point of view. If he wants you to buy a $2000, 4000 watt amplifier and four $50 subwoofers then do it. Those voice coils will get hot enough to fry eggs; however, this is a good thing because you just bought the best speakers on the market and you can never go wrong with them.
Second, absolutely never discuss car audio online. Other competitors are just out to get you. They are the competition and have no reason to give useful advice. They are simply out to steal your ideas that the local salesman has given you. Every competitor knows that the dealer is always right, so of course they want to steal his ideas for their system. None of them know how to do their own installations. They always pay their dealer to do every bit of the job. Not a single competitor you come in contact with will know more than your local stereo shop, so why even waste your valuable time when you could be listening to more advice from that salesman who sold you your system.
Third, never build your own enclosure. You must be crazy if you think you could build it yourself. Those things are so complicated that only your local shop could build one. Do not ever experiment and try new things. Always go with the small sealed enclosure that your dealer will graciously build for you. Those big twenty cubic foot vented walls in some of the competitor’s cars are pointless. There are no physics behind those designs, and they simply will not work. Those enclosures are way too efficient for SPL competition. You want the least efficient box available. Surely the dealer’s small sealed box will be the loudest box on earth, because once again, he is always right. The equipment is more important than the way it is installed anyways. Since you have spent a lot of money on your system, it simply has no choice but to be loud!
Now that you have your very expensive equipment, allow the local stereo shop to plaster your vehicle with their name and logo. These stickers always make your car louder. SPL microphones know the difference between a car with stickers and one without. After all, the stereo shop wants what is best for you and they want you to have their name all over your car just to make you louder. They get absolutely nothing out of having their name on your car, and they gave you the stickers out of the goodness of their heart. You have to love these guys!
Finally, you have your wonderful sound system installed with your small sealed enclosure, and even have your special stickers to make you louder. It is now time to go to a competition and win. There is no way you could lose. You let the dealer do everything, nothing can go wrong, and you are a sure fire winner at this competition. Go out and bring home a big first place trophy!

Lol well I had to do something satirical, my teacher didnt really have a clue what I was talking about but I got an A on it. I now work at one of those local dealers but I tell people the truth there even if it means they end up buying something else and I know a little bit about getting loud, still learning though [Smile]
