I am very found of RF`s old DSM amps.
But worry abit of the charging caps in the power supply.
To my knowledge these are virtually the only parts in a amplifier who can age too the point of failure.

If i some day decides too replace these caps with new one. can i gain something with using some with a larger capacity?
Or do this interfer in a negative way with the way the amp works.

Basicly i need a word of opinion from someone who really know what they are talking about.

Good or bad idea?

Capacitors go bad b/c of heat and aging, is your amps older than 15 years? I had to replace a cap outta my home amp cause it leaked fluid, and it was still playing when that happened! The amp is around 18~21 years old(second hand so not sure) however.

I remembered that by increasing the capacitor size you'll experience cleaner bass, better dynamics and overall better performance, but my electronic teacher told me that you can only increase the size to a certain point before negative effects start to pop up...something with the charging circuit not being able to charge the larger cap correctly...kinda like putting too big of a tire on your car I guess [Smile]

I'm sure you can increase the capacitance with no ill effects. Larger caps will have a larger ESR, you can increase a caps ESR until it doesn't really help much. But I don't think you'll be able to increase the capacitance to that extent simply due to physical size constraints.

Edited to make it look like I can spell and type:)

you really have to be carefull if you increase the size of the powersupply capacitors because you may blow your rectifying diodes. Diodes can only handle so much current, so when you go and double the capacitance your going to (theoretically) double the peak rush current that goes through the rectifiers. You'll want to look at upgrading the diodes & rectifiers if you upgrade your caps.

"I am very fond of RF's DSM amps"

If you like them.. why change them? They're designed how they are, just drop in new caps just like the old caps and you'll have a touched up amplifier.

Other componenty can fail, especially FETs -> Due to expansion and contraction as they heat up and cool off, eventually they will break.
