Does anyone have any thoughts on the use of a LT circuit to make a certain driver work better in a IB install? Specifically, I would like to use a RE 8 or some other relatively high-xmax 8 in my front doors for midbass duties. BUT it's pretty hard finding a driver with the right frequency response. So, I was thinking that a LT would possibly be the way to go.

Thanks,
Ash

heya.

Normally LTs are done on sealed boxes.

IBs have little support,no air cushion for linearity. I wouldnt LT an IB.

An air compliance is much more linear than a drivers suspension in the low frequencies.

Your saying you want Lows from an 8"?
How much spl? Seal it up then consider an LT

Cheers!

No I am saying that I want a good 8" driver to use as a midbass, and my choices would be greatly expanded if I could use a LT, at least I think. These midbasses would probably be crossed over at, say, 60-65 Hz.

Anyway, I don't really want to build out a sealed enclosure in my doors, much less a ported one. Preferably, I could find a 8" driver that's designed for IB, like the ones JL makes, Illusion, Morel makes one, etc. But, I was thinking that I could get some extra flexability with a LT type application.

your choices are MINIMISEd because for high spl youl require HUGe amounts of excursion.

theres no reason why an average midbass speaker needs an LT anyway!

I'm not looking for huge SPL, in fact I will be running my subs sealed. What I AM looking for is midbass that can keep up in the 70-120Hz range. And, a common midbass 8" speaker has a very rapidly falling response in a IB setup, while I want a very flat response. Model up a low-Qts 8" driver in a VERY large sealed box (much like a IB setup) and take a look at its frequency response in the 65-120Hz area. Not flat at all....

Well hey, that's a good point. You've actually tested the RE8 IB/in a door?

Thanks,
Ash

id use RTA to see what my curve is like.

using a generic one size fits all cabin gain statement doesnt do for different cars

measure it and see if it does what u want without extensive filtering.

the number stated is not taking cabin gain into consideration but is mirrorly a mockup of a IB alignment

measuring with an RTA is all well and good if he had the drivers, however, he doesn't and this thread is his way of trying to determine if he should spend $100+ on the pair

no
measure another set of midbass(any) in the car,and out of the car on the ground in 2pi space, compare.

Difference=cabin gain

btw kan3 have u read about how small speaker boxes are nonlinear due to the air pressure inside them changing to a large % of the total? causing non linearity above 120db. i read it in an acoustic engineering book.Im wondering if it applies to ported boxes also, above tuning,in the sealed box operation part

CHeers!
