from what i know, it doesnt seem like its possible but i just thought i might ask..
Is there anyway to drop the ohms of a speaker with out bridging it to another speaker???
for example: one 8ohm speaker, connect to the amp at 4 ohms?
i was thinking, bridge/parralel a 8 ohm resistor with the 8 ohm speaker to get 4 ohms but it would probably fry the amp and the resistor...? Thanks for looking.

Yeah it's possible without a resistor. You can do it with a little device called accumatch. It's a sort of transformer that you connect between the amp and the speaker.

The Accumatches can change the impedance that the amp "sees" but can have other undesireable effects on the amps, frequency response and other problems. They're big and usually expensive but they work.
Adding a resistor in parallel will lower the ohms and your amp will make more power. Your speaker will get approximately no more power. All the extra power will go to making the resistor get hot, and you'll need a big expensive resistor anyway.

COOL!!! 3 replys!! Thanks guys! imma look in that accumatch thing..if the price is right and would work on some scanspeaks mid basses (<300hz) alright then they might have a customer...

nevermind, i just bought some 7 inch focals that are already 4 ohms.. i wanted to used some Scan Speak Kevlar 8 ohm mid basses but that would cut my power in half which wouldve killed the point of having mid basses

I agree with JC2, and suggest changing woofers to SPL (soundstream) which makes 2 ohm speakers, there are DVC's out there with dual 2-ohm and even quad 1 ohm voice-coils, but.., keep in mind there is a sacrifice to be made when going with lower impedance. -no control of the woofer cone (it will sound sloppy and muddy.., but louder) -amplifier life is shorter -increased Intermodulation(notch) Distortion(that's the bad one, not THD) - increased chances of toasting a woofer. - increased drain from electrical system.
Oh BTW, as for adding the resistor, it will have to be a monster(about a foot long) size one, considering the pwer levels it has to dissipate, and yeah it will get RED hot.
If you need more power, get a bigger amp, if you want it louder, make the box bigger, or add more woofers, or add more power, or all of the above, just do it right.

Wow, Member #35! Thank you Sir for your reply. well, i was kinda set on this amp (Tube Drive Blue 275) and its rated at 75 watts at 4 ohms..and i was thinking about using some Scan Speak 18cm Kevlar mid basses..but they only come in 8 ohms..but that would end up at around 37 watts! well.. im not planing those anymore..but thanks for the replys, everyone! ..but im kinda still wondering..what about if i bridge the 8 ohm speaker with something like this...? http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&PartNumber=019-020&DID=7

Hey jc2, Can you expand on this point some more? Mainly the undesireable traits. Thanks!
