I believe that would give you more of a chance for unwanted noise. I've always heard that you want to ground your amps as close to the actual amp as possible.

I grounded my RF 50.1 with a 1 ferrad cap to the battery (for a short time) using 4 guage. I blew one of my ecplise 8812.6s (ripped the cone right off and the voice coils dented the aluminum). My dealer started giving me a bunch of BS about how the ground didn't have enough resistance #*@?? (I'm in comp engineering so I've taken physics 101 and I know it is a bunch of BS). However, Eclipse is sending me new 8812 so I'm happy.

Anyhow, if you want to permenantly ground your amp to the negative terminal of your battery you should use 2 guage wire or less (otherwise there will be too much resistance) but I don't recomend it. Ground you amp to the chasis using 8 or 4 guage and then run a 4 guage wire from the negative terminal on your battery to the firewall on your car. This way the ground won't have to go through your (crappy) stock ground wire.

In a BMW that has the battery in the trunk, why would you want to ground it any where else? Especially if the amp only has a foot of wire to connect it?

There is *apparently* a chance that this will add noise to your system. The amount of metal conducting the signal in a chassis ground means there is less resistance on a chassis ground than there is on a wire straight to the battery.

There have been noted competition vehicles that HAVE run straight to the ground.

It's cheaper not to, and less chance of noise. Therefore, therefore my opinion is that it is better to ground near your amps, on the chassis. HOWEVER.. If you have another battery near your amps or even your primary battery near your amps, then I would go straight to the battery with LARGE wire, off a distribution block.

Good Luck!
