Just what the title says- I have been reading about TL's and what I understand is that to design them, it's simply the speed of sound/4 x (the length of desired resonant frequency)???
I am curious about these as well as horn boxes.
If designed properly, do they sound as good/as loud as ported boxes in either/or home and car environments?

They are simple in theory, and in design, but to get the full desirable results from them, fine tuning is at hand.

The 1/4 wave design isn't the only way to build them, you can also use 1/2 or 3/4 wave. The 1/4 designs usually need stuffing to perform properly, while the longer designs usually don't.

But overall they are easy to design and build. As far as efficiency, they are not much better than an optimum ported box at best.

The main advantage to them is to reduce resonances inside the box to have near perfect sound.

Ah, I see. Yeah, I know the stuffing is used to reduce resonances which occur at I believe every 4th multiple of the tuning frequency (i.e. 50Hz tuning with resonances at 200Hz, 800Hz, etc) am I right?

Stuffing also slows down the wave so the line may not have to be as long.

Yes, good point. The stuffing slows the speed of sound down inside the box.

for SPL, they are not very practical, but for SQ, they may even be overkill. [Big Grin]

If you build one half arsed, you'll get half arsed sound, if you do your work and kick some arse, the sound will kick it too.

Yeah I don't think they hit at all in cars...by design theory they would be a flop pretty much...to tell the truth I have never seen a TL street car.
