I would think since bass is a movemnt of low sound vibs. You have to look at the path on which they would take to get the most of the "correct" sound vibs to the fromt of the car. I think that if your SUV was loaded, it wouldn't matter, because of the nature of the car/SUV.
But In my case I wanted to have the appeealing look of my subs in my 76 Pontiac Grand Prix. With the trunk having a "V" shape to it. I hade the box built to fase out and have the box ported to the reear deck. But that was a long time ago. And I don't the intire street to hear what is in my car either. I rather keep my bass to myself. ( You can't hear ant 'car distortion from the outside, made quarters foam filled)

What size & how many subs do you have? is your box sealed or ported? I have found that with the JL audio tripple 10" powerwedge boxes, they SLAM fireed tward the rear wall. eaisily 3db louder than with the box facing any other direction. as a rule of thumb the distance from the front of the sub will need to be about 1/3 the dia. (ř) of the cone. probably a little more for drivers with high X-MAX. so you may not have room for 12's or 15's. I also don't know if a ported box will react the same way. but basicly think of your trucks rear wall like the hatch in a hatchback. it's very solid, if you flex it you'll get louder. about the 2nd bes way I know to fire the subs is to aim straight to where the bottom of the windshield meets the firewall. I could hear an audible change in volume from the drivers seat when moving my 2 12's from strait twards the firewall, windshield and then twards the middle. I think straight up is better for sound quality.
