Why bother?
They're cheap to buy. For large amperages just buy a clamp on one.

Are you looking for something to have on the interior of your car? If so you can start with a voltmeter circuit like was described in another post a day or two ago. To convert the current to a voltage you have two basic choices, use a small resistance, or use the magnetic field generated by the current through the wire. If you use a resistance you can be more accurate, but you add resistance in your power line so you will have more voltage drop. If you go the route of using the magnetic field, you probably won't be that accurate(you can but it would take some calibrating), but you don't add any more resistance to your power line.

Yeah but for high amounts of current don't you have to use a magnetic field

I could probably figure out how to build one, but I would then need a calibrated ammeter to test it against anyway. On top of that I'm not even sure I could make it for less than the cost of ammeters second hand on ebay.

Are you talking an AC current meter for the output, or DC for the current draw?

Well, considering you can get dakota digitals up to (I think) about 200 amps, you shouldn't have any single amp drawing more than that......

Check with Digi-Key or Allied Electronics. Both have web sites. There are a few small current transducers available pretty cheap (~$50). Most use a separate power supply, but can be pretty accurate.

American Aerospace Industries is what I use at work, but I'm not sure how much they cost.

Be sure to look at the bandwidth, because a lot are geared toward 60Hz power transmission. You want it to be accurate over the whole audio spectrum.
