Ok, here's the deal. I am a junior in highschool and there is a science fair in my town coming up in the spring. I want to do a project based on gaining the highest spl in my truck. I know it sounds corny, but it is not just going to be a simple project. I was thinking of proving ideas and concepts using some cool research tools and getting some good graphs of in-box impedance rises, box placement, transfer functions, and other stuff like that. Anyone have any ideas on where to start? I really want to get some good props for car audio and try to show the usefulness of the sport and hopefully get some help from some of the record holders to draw some attention to the sport. Maybe I could get some pictures of the Beast and Mike's van to gain people's interest. I hope that I don't get some closed-minded judge like officer doofy off that TLC show judging my project.

Any suggestions on sites that have technical information? I need equations or charts so I can get an idea of what I need to test.

Thanks for the links. I don't think I am going to do a horn box, because I am probably going to have to build multiple boxes, and I don't to have to deal with horns. Anyways, I need to find an o'scope, an oscillator, a distortion analyzer, and a good multimeter. Any recommendations? I have no idea what to look for in an o'scope, distortion analyzer or oscillator. I might be able to pick some stuff off e-bay or borrow some from school if they have anything.

Basically the objective is to design the highest spl in my vehicle... I will try and make it very efficient and use several "test" boxes to find the highest SPL possible. I am probably going to graph my transfer function, port gain, in-box impedance, and distortion %'s. My goal is the highest SPL possible (w/o building a wall or something to crazy), so I need every advantage I can get. This project is going to be great because I can get props from school and do what I need to do anyways. Hopefully, I will conduct the testing using two alpine type-r 15's and two mtx 8100d's.

I know that , but that doesn't really help me with my project... I am going to have to give a bunch of graphs of what makes the system louder, for instance, port location, box location, box size, port size, in-box impedance, and other wierd stuff. I am just trying to design an extremely "efficient" set-up.

I would be perfectly willing to give you a hand with this, but I'd also like to get Colin, JC and Dank with me as well.. Anybody interested in doing a correspondance for this project?

Thanks!!! I really haven't done to much testing, but that is really the reason I choose this project. I will probably be able to get my parents to help sponsor me with all the wood I will need and maybe some other stuff. I 3 o'scopes at the school. I don't know anything about them though, other than the fact that one is accurate up to 10volts which I don't think will help. The other two are >50mhz's. I just need all of the little tips that will probably be beneficial along with box design. I don't have to do it right the first time because I plan on building about 3+ boxes with different sizes, and sub/port layouts.

Please note port displacement is shown as such to ease visualisation, it is actually largest at tuning.

hey guys- if there is going to be some collaboration between you, i would like to suggest something. this site http://www.efmax.co.uk/box.htm
gives a pretty good description on what is involved in designing the RIGHT box with the right subwoofer and is FULL of graphs. however, it leaves much to be desired. I think that if you can stretch this short tutorial into ten times its size, than it would be the most complete ground up tutorial on speaker enclosure design i have ever seen. explain terminology and concepts pretty much from the ground up and i think you can something incredible work. fully understanding ported enclosures is a good start for any audiophile...

Erskine's a good guy, I've been round to his place to learn how to desing bandpass boxes which is quite interesting.

I may try to do some sort of tutorial over Xmas if I can find the time.

Hey, how do those subs handle the power? I don't want to have to ship them back after about a week of bumpin. If the DVC's don't work, I can always just run SVC's with 1 mtx 8100d. Do you work at CC?

Before anybody can help you, and believe me, you can learn a lot from the people here, you need to tell us what your possibilities are.
How big of a box?
How much power?
What kind of truck?
There are a lot of trade offs with different setups. You can learn a lot from software, but it will not really work in your car.
Tell us what direction you want to go, then we can tell you more from there.

Ok, here's the deal. I ordered my subs and amps yesterday (alpine type-r 15's and two mtx 8100d's) and I am getting my wiring put in some time after christmas (0/1 gauge, breakers, two more red-tops). I have an infiniti qx4, which is the same as a nissan pathfinder. I don't want to do a wall, and I have about 7 cubes to work with without the box going up to the rear windows(ss1-2 nw). I can make a box the will go bigger, but I would have to fold down my back seats. Right now, my subs get loudest at 47hz in a sealed box (1.25ft^3 for each driver) with the windows up. I hope I got it all.
