Just curious if tuning my 2 DD 9512d subs in a 11-12 cu.ft. box would make a difference in the extension (I am worried I'll have too much if I tune above 40Hz). Should I tune to 35Hz to play it safe or won't it matter? Thanks.

Basically I want to have as big a box as possible (up to 12 cu.ft.) with the best SQ possible for 2 DD 9512d subs...advice anyone?

Ya, good luck. You have some work cut out for you.
Your gonna have to build your box without glue and get the tunning right, then glue the box, then EQ it.

As long as the tuning freq. and port area are proportional and the installation (wiring, ground, etc.) is excellent, then I'm fine, right? Or instead of 12 cubes should I go with 8 for better SQ, tuned to 40Hz? Suggestions welcome...

Huge boxes are for SPL, not SQ(in most cases).. I would recommend using a good box program to design a box and measure your cars transfer function to meet the two. Tuning low is good but it really takes some trial and error. ANd then remember to build the box like a brick and you should be ok.

What kind of box programs do you recommend--like ones that I can use (don't have to know lots of complex things)? Thanks.

well in your case i suggest you find someone who has a box modeling program (other than winISD, unless that is good enough for you), find this person and have them model a box for your application.. it might take some coersion and $$$ to get this person to work for you, hehe...
LEAP is a good one...

Ive got LEAP, Bassbox 6 Pro and WIN ISD.. If you have connections you can get bassbox, as it sells for $100 plus.. LEAP is $495 BUT you need a software key to run it so just having the software is useless.. And win ISD is free and a quite decent program..

Winisd is an excellent program if you don't mind having to go back and re-calculate net enclosure volume several times to narrow down the tuning frequency of the vent as the net interior volume changes. It's kind of a pain in the butt sometimes. But it's free and will yield excellent results if you take your time and use it properly.

LSPCAD would be my next choice, though it is a little more complex. I haven't worked with bassbox pro yet, but I'd like to. I believe that it will take into account the port displacement which should definitely make things faster and easier.

BTW, the tuning frequency won't change the speed of attack that much. It will dramatically effect the low frequency extension and overall impact though. The higher tuning frequencies will have much less low frequency extension and more impact due to the peak being higher in frequency. But you trade off low end for impact and spl.

this can turn into a proverbial wild goose chase.
For one thing, the "attack" of a sub depends on the speaker's transient response time, and the cabinet. The cabinet must have a specific amount of air(obviously), in order to assure yourself that you have optimum transient response from the woofer, press the woofer(evenly) down, and release it, the faster it comes back to rest position the better. This will depend on the "springiness" of the compressed air in the cabinet.
The shape of the box will affect SQ along with the way it's made for the vehicle it's in. Somethings a computer program can't tell you. Practice makes perfect.

Mr.Dank right on Brother !!

I agree.......
I have leap, which is very useful... and still my recommendation is to use winisd to get you in the ballpark, the experiment. DD 9512's are very very fast in the range I use them in (40hz -80hz). So if you want them to hit tight, ya a big box gives a lower Q (same as Eli47 said in different words). Also, Its worth mentioning that with the size of box your talking about, the impedance of your subs will most likely triple......maybe quadruple.
This is assuming you use them in the same range I am. i.e... Subsonic filter and lowpass below maybe 125hz....

What is a "car's transfer function"? How do you measure it? How does it effect the subs/enclosure/sound?

Is the goal to build as large a box as fittable in the vehicle to obtain as close to a Q of .707 or is there a way to obtain the same results by making a smaller enclosure?

I have a pair of JL 10W1-4ohms and am reconsidering designing a new enclosure for them.

You want the highest Q you can get. that means your car/sub (acting as one system) can store a larger amount of energy and build up a lot of spl(Instantly).

A Q(or Qtc) of .707 refers to sealed boxes ONLY. For vented boxes, there is a Q, dependant on the "alignment you use". If you plug the paramters of your woofer into a program, it will design a box with a Q of around 1. A peak in a box does not mean higher Q, only that the speaker/box combo is misaligned.
