For many years i dream to build a very big driver, like 24 or 36 inch, but the big problem is that i dont know how i could find the ideal magnet...

Recently i got a motor structure used to move the head of a old hard drive( big like a freezer!! you know..) The magnet is about 80 to 100 pounds and 11W x 8L x 6H inch.I used a HP gaussmeter and i measured 18 000 Gauss(1,8 Tesla !!) where the magnetic field cross the coil!!

It also include a big 4 inch dia coil by 5 inch long(just the wire..!) maybe the xmax can easyly be 1,5 to 2 inch..It's also a dvc 1,2 ohms each.. Can i'll get 5 inch xmech p to p?!.. and does it will be able to handle the kW per vc ??!! ;-)))

Now i am planning to desing and build the rest: it mean... frame (solid!!) cone, spider, surround.. etc..

I think i'll need your help or idea to suggest me the better material i should use for spider and the cone.

Please help...

Well, doctor, I've been doing lots of thinkinga bout reasonable 24+" driver sizes and have several thoughts on them.. As for the spider and such, perhaps a conventional spider is not fitting for the application ? (Hint hint)

Nor, would I suggest using a conventional surround.. Perhaps something that doesn't roll but instead stretches and couples to the area of the driver?

Hey Shadow I have been thinking about trying out a new suspension system for sub applications...what kinds of things are you thinking? I have been wondering how ahrd it would be to design a system where the cone is controlled linearly by a regular spring, and laterally by some sort of guide system. Any thoughts? Also, do you know any good materials which may act as a good surround amterial for the stretching idea?
Thanks,
Ash
