I want to put a pot on my rcas to control the volume (gain) on my highs amp. Now i figure if i get a double pole potentiometer thats about 1Kohm and put it in my rcas i could control the volume up front of the car at will.

Now my brother mentioned to be that i maybe should wire this without the amp gains because it will change the total resistance.

Now my father (electrical technologist) didnt mention anything like that when i first spoke to him.

It doesnt make sense to bypass the amp gains because i want to only be ble to go up to the amp gains normal set level when the pot is at full. this way i never send the amp into clipping.

Any ideas? Suggestions?

you can do that.. just run it inline w/ the rca's, and set the gains on the amp to where you want them, then the POT will only go as high as the gains on the amp..

this will work, HOWEVER, the gains on your amp should NOT be used as a simple volume control. they should be set and left. another device (HU, XOVER, LINE DRIVER etc) should be used to make adjustments based on certain types of music.

but it will work if you want =) good luck

To be honest, batman, I would make REALLLLLLLLLLLLL sure that your RCA preouts can handle a sub 1kohm load FIRST.

I want to do the same to control the level of my bass shakers. I'm sure not all POT's are the same. Can someone tell me what I need to buy and if I can get it at Radioshack?

What I would do is buy a dual 10k (or even 50k pot) each "channel" of the pot will have 3 leads (6 total) there will be two that act like a resistor (doesn't change no matter where you have the knob turned to) then there is a "wiper" that the resistance varies depending on the knob possition and which end of the "resistor" you measure from. what you want to do is hook one end of the "resistor" to the incoming signal, and the other end to ground (shield of the rca, not car ground) then the "wiper" you want to use as the output going to your amp or whatever. this lets you adjust the volume from full to zero.

Beg pardon if my stupidity is showing, but couldn't you just get one of Alpine(or anyone else's, I just have several Alpines, and haven't seen many other brands) preamp level volume controls ? They allow attenuation of the signal, in that you can only turn them down, and can be used anywhere in the preamp chain. Perhaps this application is different, but that seems easier than building one. Then again, perhaps my puny brain isn't getting all the way around the problem. Someone feel free to slap me if necessary.

Still adding parts, but currently running Eclipse 7001, 5961, 55090, 39011, 5122, Nak TD-700, Sharp 15" Flat Screen, Sony PS2, some mediocre mids and highs, and one of my T-Domes...soon will come madness.

anyways i built it a couple of days ago.
I used a dual gang 50Kohm pot. A mini-project box and some rcas and it doesnt look to shabby. I've tried it out on my VCR inputs and home stereo. I will test it in a car as soon as i get another one.
Thanks for your help guys. Also, for refrence there is a document in the termpro.com articles section called "X ways to adjust level" or something like that. It shows pin layout of the pot and explains it in detail.

Oh, BTW. Why dont i just buy a alpine? Well, 1. i dont have the money. 2. i had the pot laying around. 3. i was extremely bored and needed to built something.
