i have 3 12 ohm speakers, am i at 4 ohms, and will 1 more bring me down to 2 ohms?

So yes you are at 4ohms now. 4 woofer will get you 3ohms. You need 6 woofers if you what to get to a 2ohm load.

thanks man, that helped... so will 3 ohms be stable on any amp?, or should i stick with 3 speakers?

3 ohms will be stable on most punch amps. Almost everyone I know in this forum runs their punches at 2 ohm mono!!

3 would be fine

not sure about this...but I believe that the box you build usually adds to the resistance.

so...if you're using a small sealed...your overall resistance could actually be around 5 ohms or so.

I've heard of people running their speakers down to 1 and 2 ohms..but the box resistance made the amp run stable.

You are correct Patrick, the thing that many people overlook is that there is more than just DC resistance in subs and the impedance fluctuates greatly dependant on frequency and enclosure. The thing that really sucks is that in a ported box for example, the impedance is usually the highest right at the peak of the responce curve of the enclosure. Impedance is your biggest enemy when designing a SPL vehicle.
