The force due to a coil in a gap is given by:

Current in coil X number of turns in field

Right?

Then someone explain the trend of large diamter voice coils to me.

The circumfrence of a circle is Pi*Diameter, right? Therefore, lets say the 2" coil has 20 turns of wire in the gap. To have 20 turns of wire, the 4" coil must have approximately 20*Pi*Diameter or 80*Pi amount of coil. The 2" coil would have 40*Pi amount of coil...

Considering that the coil, if it has the same guage, would have twice the resistance in the 4" diameter coil, one would have twice the current (reactance aside!) in the 2" coil.. 2x the current AND the same number of turns = 2x the force, right?

Well.. One step farther- If we want to equalize the resistance, we could make the 4" coil of a larger guage (more moving mass, directly lowering the Force/Mass ratio) or cut the two coils making a DVC. But, we can do that for the 2" version too, and raise the guage (to increase power handling) or multilayer the wire (further increasing power handling AND putting more turns in the gap), always ending up with more force for a smaller coil.

So why use 3-4 (even 5 (PPI Pro 15) and 7 (Aliante Pro)) inch voice coils?

Aside from increased former strength?

LOL, you are wrong, you're forgetting the area for a start, not to mention Eo.

I would correct you but I'm absolutely crap at this and I've got an exam on it in two weeks, I think I'm in trouble as the lectures are useless and the supervisions don't help much either.

I'll look it up and work it out for you if I can though.

Marketing? Hell if I know (like there was even a chance), but my first reaction kinda would be : more moving mass/area = larger amount of heat dissipation...uhh...right...dude, your getting way to smart.

Ive been told that the magnetic wire is not just regular wire, the resistance is controlled. this is from a guy that built really good spaekers, but had the coils designed by a different company.

Bigger the coil the better heat despence and the more power you can give it,
