Ok, i've heard this answered many times...but as it is my brain's memory recall function isn't operative at the moment, at least not correctly operating...and i figure if i post this here i won't get a billion different answers
1) How many dB before we as humans perceive something as TWICE as loud? i thought it was 10dB but i read somewhere it's 6dB...
2) 3dB is a doubling of acoustic energy correct?
thx ahead of time....i should know this hehe
any other info you wanna throw in is welcome as well

The general rule is that people percieve a difference of 10 db as being "twice as loud". However, this is somewhat subjective, and will vary from person to person. As far as doubling acoustic energy, I am not sure, but I think the answer is 6db.

people hear in three db steps. 10 db sounds as a doubling of energy to the human ear. so someone hitting a 140 and another hitting a 142 you as the human ear reacts probably won't hear the difference in loudness.

That doesn't make sense to me. For a few reasons: I have a car with a typical stock electrical system. I have a 300 watt amplifier. If I take my two subwoofers of one brand and hook them up, its loud. But if i take my friend's two subwoofers of a different brand (of same quality construction), and hook them up, his are considerably louder or quieter. That would mean that, let's say, my stereo is 130dB and my stereo with his subs is 120dB. That doesn't make sense to me. If i can perceive that my subs are much louder, how can that be a 10dB difference?

It's not easy to day wht something sounds like when it's twice as loud though, we can usually say just/a bit/a lot/loads louder Colin

kingt i dont think you understood me right. you hear in three db steps not 10. 10 db sounds twice as loud. so a guy hitting 150 sounds about twice as loud as a 140.
Hmm.. Might I suggest researching sound intensity (in Sones) vs. the DB scale? A doubling in power is 3db, yes. Does this correspond to a doubling in intensity?
Also.. How can you judge "twice" as loud? Not a realistic point to argue
