ok last night my friends m100 bit the dust, it was turned on, he reached back ot get his coat and about that time he heard a loud pop. and it wouldn't even turn on. so im thinking maybe the zipper on his jacket shorted something across the remote line.
he took the amp out this morning and when i got it, it smelled like a cap was blown, you know that nasty fish oil smell, well i open it up looking around the remote terminal, nothing strange there, so i remove the heatsink, and the fet's in the power supply are all growing tumors and fried, only other thing i found was what looked like arching had occured on the heatsink of the pos. diode, which is mounted to the heat sink, this didn't seem so kosher to me??
the heatsink of the diode was isolated from the amp heatsink with those little plastic things, but the screw was not. when he bought this amp i took the cover off to check it out on the inside, this was about a year ago, and you could tell the amp had been worked on before, so im thinking the short from the secondaries to ground would cause this to happen, but why a year later???
any ideas ???
