anyone have any good info on specifics of various kinds of enclosures that use a horn? i am trying to figure out the best way to build a ported enclosure that uses a horn at the end of the port. Does anyone have any info or know of any sites that pertain to this kind of enclosure?

thanks for the help,

The vent wave isn't suitable for horn loading.. There is not enough pressure there to create the "horn effect".

The horn effect is (loading a high pressure-capable driver such that is squeezes a small displacement of air through a small throat (creating a bottleneck) so that the pressure increases. This is then diffused across the cross sectional area of the horn, allowing the driver to operate in its most energy efficient region (high pressure, low excursion) and still displace a large volume of air.. Its like making an 8" water pipe shrink into a 2" water pipe, then putting a shower head on it.. You get a higher area of higher pressure water than the original 8" tube would have been capable of.

The port back wave would be due to compressed air in the box, and would not be able to compress and create the horn effect) unless you stimulated MMMMMMMMAAAAAASSSSSSSSIIIIIIIIVVVVVEEEEEE
excursion of the wave-generating driver or used a
TTTTTTTTTTIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
box!

I'm there already. I had a thread about the specifics of this enclosure. I am gonna build a box for my JL 15w3. I want to build a box like this, and wanted to know what you guys thought about it.

thanks for the help so far,

Cheers, there is another couple of guy's in the UK who have nailed the black art of the horn. Unfortunately I was just messing around with this design and found it really efficient. A true horn box (such as the pair in my van) is very big, too big for a car, but if you can't afford alot of amps their the way to go. Especially if you can only afford one sub amp, a couple of 15's and you've got a stock 23 year old electrical system (55amp alternator).I'm going to try a different design this year. The only downer is that it will fill best part of the van!
Put it this way, one of the experts with this box hit 157.1db (with two 15's) on the dash and the box was over 6ft away from the mic.
