Ok, here is the situation I have a Ford Probe GT, I recently replaced the battery, when i was putting the terminals on the battery one of them, the negative, broke as i was tightening it. so I replaced it with a piece that the store recommended. well i get home to fix this and i notice that one of the battery ground(i think) was too short so i went to my stereo shop and got some 8 gauge cable to replace the short piece. It's all together and now when i am idleing the voltmeter on my dash reads on the NORMAL scale at "L". Before i replaced the ground wire and the battery it NEVER did this! also the wire the was to short looked a little bigger then the 8 gauge i replaced it with? All i have for equipment is a Crossfire 602, and 2 JL 10w3's, and a Sony deck model C-680. i have 4 gauge power and ground. also the gain on the amp is set at pretty much "0". sooo i am totally baffled and getting really frustrated!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

First of all, the negative wasn't "too short". A negative, in the case of (pun not intended) a car, is connected to chassis ground.. That means, run directly to ground on the car. Therefore, the ground could not have been too short, or it would have had no connection at all.

Using no less than 4 awg wire, replace the ground wire with the same length as it had before. Make sure the ground is against proper bare metal, and check the connection by using a voltmeter if you have access to one.

Almost all vehicles use a high amount of current just to run, and if your 8 awg wire is too long, it will begin to heat up and melt. Solve this problem IMMEDIATELY. 4 awg wire to ground, same length as it was factory.
