It's a high pass filter that is supposed to get rid of information below human hearing. It can go between the deck and x-over or just on you input to you sub amp. They are nice for a little extra insurance on ported enclosures.

They can be used with sealed enclosures no problem. And you can get rid of the music information below sonic and save that amp power for the stuff you can hear. Only a few of the pickiest audiophyles will miss the sub-sonics. Most modern music doesn't have much down there though so the difference is small. Man, I'd like to find that digitally mastered canon 1812 overture thingy..hehe SUB SUB sonic

I just wanted to add if you are planning on using an audiocontrol Epicenter for your subsonic filter. Make sure it is put before the crossover it needs to see everything to recreate the bass.
I just got done helping a kid I know re-install the peice after his head unit because as he said it wasn't working as good as he thought it should.
On another note:
I believe subsonic refers to below speed of sound right.
Actually what is below human hearing is called INFRASONIC. Frequencies from 1 to 20 Hz which are inaudible but which causes visible oscillation of the speaker woofer cone caused by turntable resonances, floppy floors, acoustic feedback, bad recordings, and aggravated by vented speaker systems cause great unnecessary use of amp power, IM distortion and occasional woofer destruction.
Not to be nit picky...

Infrasonic is the modern proper version of the achaic subsonic. Subsonic is a proper use when describing frequencies below 15 or 20. And those frequencies have speeds at the speed of sound, it's their wavelengths that put them out of hearing. Subsonic usually has to be qualified with the word speed, or at least be used in a discussion relating solely with speed. In order to mean below the speed of sound. Since we discuss audio here it's appropriate to just say subsonic or infrasonic. Thanks for keeping me on my toes there AE

Not a good spl disc either but I still really like boombastic. Man that gets body panels flexing! To bad my wall doensn't hit as hard down at the low notes this tune likes. Like 30 hz.
