I would like to know the truth to this question. Is it true that having a common chamber sub box (2+ drivers) has any dB gain over chamber isolated drivers? A friend pulled out his Mobile Dynamics book and it said that having a common chamber with a couple of other adjustments would yield up to a 6 dB gain. Anyone want to comment?
Thanks!

Well, having two subs in separate chambers vs. having two subs in the same chamber, I would not expect any gain.. Be more specific about the "adjustments" ?

I may be wrong butI think I remember reading somewhere that in an open feild, there is a gain when using common chambers, but as you reduce the quadrants the drivers fire into the gain deminishes to the point of very little if any in a closed field like a car. Personally I prefer common chambers for simplicity, and the fact I know both driver are working in the exact same air space and the box "see's" the same port if applicable.

I don't know if this help answer your question or not, but I once had 12 10" woofers in a common (ported) box. A friend of mine had 12 12" woofers in individual (sealed) boxes. I had 150watts to each sub, he had 300watts to each. We were within .3 dB's of each other. His installer tried to duplicate my design, but when placed the common air design in my friends truck, he lost 1.4 dB's. From this simple comment, I would venture to say that there are no "base" to any ONE design. And as for the 6 dB gain... no comment. Good Luck and God Bless.

I always thought that a common chamber enclosure for more than 2 drivers was good for mono applications because of 2 things:
#1 The subs are playing in an equally divided air space in turn making them all see the same. However, there is a downfall...When a sub blows in competition the air space is dramatically increased which could cause the other drivers to fail.
#2 With all drivers in the common air space it helps to make all drivers play on the same frequency limiting cancellation.
I could be wrong but thats my thoughts.
