I was wondering if anyone has added preouts to a factory head by going inside the unit and getting signal before the amp chip? is this possible? It seems to be logical, just wanted to know how well it works before i try it.

I definately think it is possible. I had thought of doing this in a couple different cars. I would think the pre-amp signal even in a factory deck would be decent. You don't need to undo anything to try it so it would be well worth a try.
On a non-CD player deck, this would be (IMO) a fruitless excersize as a line-level convertor's effects would be masked by the already poor tape performance, however, on a CD deck, why not just go ahead and use it as a transport and make/use an outboard DAC?
But yeah, it sounds possible, however the voltage before the "amp chip" would probably need to be stepped up or amplified.

There is probably enough preamp voltage to use with most amps since most will work with as little as 0.5 Volts. I would assume they have at least this much before the amp IC. It would be ideal to amplify this before any long cable runs, but if you are using an amp with a factory deck you would still get better performance this way than you would with a line level converter. I have my factory Nissan CD player right here, I might take it apart tonight and see what I can figure out.

hi. Ok yes i have done a factory head cd player with rca's made into them. i used the output chip of the head. Soldered rcas onto them its that simple. The only thing is u wont have many volts of output. In one instance a ac delco cd head had 1.5 which is normal for lower quality aftermarket heads. old heads didnt have many volts of output Since the amps couldnt handle many volts in. U can just use a linedriver to boost the signle. I have done it to a few heads in cars that ive done that didnt want to change the head out to a aftermarket one because of the risk of theft. peace
