I was interested in an opinion on the best 2 way crossover available (cost no object) and anysuggestions as to the frequency that is best to cross over at. I have a Linear Power bi-amped system with Dynaudio 240 MK II in front (Frequency Response 25kHz to 55 Hz ) and 2 Dynaudio MW 180 (Frequency Response 1.4 kHz to 35 Hz) in a subwoffer enclosure.
I have tried an Alpine DRE-A200 and was not happy with the sound which uses a 6 db slope on the high pass and a 12 db slope on the low pass.
I did like the Linear Power X03 which uses a 12 db slope on the high pass and a 24 db slope on the low pass, but I had some mechanical problems with that unit.
I was thinking of a Audiocontrol EQX 13 which uses Liknkwitz-Riley 24 db slopes on both high and low pass and has a 13 band dual bandwidth equalizer.
Thanks for any information. It is greatly appreciated.
Often crossovers can be difficult to approximate reality with theory.
Active crossovers can be had having almost any amount of slope, highest usual is 72 db/o, which is brick-wall.
I prefer using active crossovers because this allows for bi-amping. Passive crossovers can be made (designed specifically) using LEAP to provide an exacting frequency response graph, level out peaks, etc.
As you said you are biamped, going active is probably the best way to go.. Considering that, here is what I would do, personally.
Get ahold of a VERY adjustable crossover (eg. Sony XES or RF EPX2) and tweak the crapola out of it (finding the best possible crossover points/slopes), then keep those or have someone custom build you a pair of 12v active crossover units using those points.
Bear in mind, RTA'ing your car and then using EQ(s) might accomplish your goals better than messing with the crossover
