hey there.

i would like to put a LED in my dash that flashes whenever my ignition is off. i have easy access to power, ground and ignition (i.e. it's +12 when the key is turned). i also have a few red LEDs.

now, does anyone know how this could be done? would i need to get one of those LEDs that flashes on it's own, or is a normal one cool? i assume i will need some relays and diodes (i have some diodes).

BTW the car is driven every day, so i assume a LED wouldn't drain my batt (and i will hide a switch under the dash so i can disable the LED when i park in my garage).

thanks!

You wouldn't need relays, just a switch and a timer... Depending on the speed of the blink (which is set with the various stuff connected to the timer).. I believe L555 timers are the accepted generic item, but I'm not quite knowledgable enough to give you any more info than that... Anybody else?

It's easier to just buy flashing LEDs. They even offer them in 12v so you don't need a resistor.

Generally, I think these offer little deterrent... you live in NVan right?

Buy a 12 volt flashing LED at Radio Shack.
Hook up + wire to constant and - wire to
ignition. Wallah, turn the car off and LED
blinks.

hmmm, sounds good to me Tech Man

and yes Dukk i live in N Van. i don't worry about theft there to much, but when im in Burnaby or horror of horrors, surrey (!!) i sure do worry!

also, I can't justify the money to get a decent alarm installed and in a month or so having to get it installed in my new vehicle...
