It is important to always remember when given an X-Max rating that it has almost no basis UNLESS listed with "X amount of coil in gap" OR "peak-to-peak of suspension".
Any unqualified ratings don't tell you how much coil remains in the gap, if any, or how much suspension stretch is left.. For example, I KNOW that HX2's can throw more than 1 inch peak to peak, period.

you see what most people don't understand is xmax really doesnt have anything to do with distance the actual sub can move. Its really only related to the coil and when it leaves the magnetic field. xmax is the figure that tells you how far it can travel before the motor structure loses control of the voice coil. and in most cases when it loses control it bottoms out hitting the back plate. and makes that really kewl popong sound.

Not too many subs can 'hard bottom' anymore. Heck, most can't 'soft bottom' either...
As covered, Xmax is the amount the driver can move with a consistent amount of coil in the gap. Generally, maximum excursion is usually thought of as Xmax + 15% since past here the motor loses the force to propel the cone anymore.

Just a bit of info true xmax is calculated by.... (coil length - gap height)/2
I miss the days when you could make that beautiful Whapppppp sould when you hard bottomed. Only thing about that is the "scrape scrape" you hear after. hehe

XMAX has some to do with maximum travel. BL product and power handling have some to do also. And yet also Voice Coil length and top plate height have some to do also. LEAP takes all these into account for sub boxes and can tell you how a speaker will behave when going even beyond true XMAX, something no other program I know of is designed to do. I am beginning to have a suspicion that magnet height/width has something to do with how a speaker will behave at this point, for a given strength.
