Anybody got any thoughts on using fibre optic cable for signal transfer?
Of course you wouldn't run like subs off of it but you could run it from say your head unit to your amp(s).I just recall seeing a demo where a roll of tv cable and a roll of fiber optic cable were compared for signal quality on a tv, and there was an obvious improvment with fiber optic. Any thoughts?

Some people have used ToSlink, I believe.. Because it is a digital cable, you have to bypass the Digital to Analog convertor in your deck, hook up an emmiter (optical emmiter for fibre optic carrying) and use an outboard digital to analog convertor in the back of your car.. It's hi-fi, but expensive and time consuming.

There is a couple of Head Units and Processors out there that have fiber hookup. Clarion and Sony are two that come to mind but I have yet to see a amp that accepts TosLink hook up. The Orion EQ that they make takes TosLink in and does RCA and BALANCED out! One thing about the fiber BE sure to BUY a premade cable they are NOT fun to make!

A fiber optic cable doesn't necessarily have to be digital. Granted that is what most of them are, but it is possible to run an analog signal through a fiber optic cable. The reason there is an improvement in signal is that unless there is a bad connection or a cut in the cable cover no noise will enter during the cable run. Also there is no resistance, capacitance, or inductance to deal with in an optic cable. Moneybag is right, they are a bitch to make, cutting, connecting, polishing... Speaking of the Orion EQ, I saw one with the a/d/s name on it at the a/d/s booth at USAC finals, I wonder if it's any different than the Orion piece.

a/d/s makes the PX-8 which has the TosLink and an A/D-Cm in it and Coustic makes decks with a digital output

Dad has a book that has like, well too many to count in a short amount of time, circuts.. Called the Encyclopedia of Electronic Circuts. Has some fiber sender and reciever circuts. Maybe one could build one and use that to run from the deck to the line driver, LD to eq and eq to amp?

I did know that. I just wondered if they were going to market that piece under the a/d/s name, or if it was different. If I ever get an extra grand laying around I'll have to pick one of those up. Posts: 2575 | From: GA | Registered: May 1999

Current fiber optic cable liker cable tv fiber can't be used. The cable can't be bent into wierd angles like 90 degrees.

I remember 10 years ago there was this sudden rage on for fobre optic cable. Phoenix Gold, Monster, and Vampire all made these wicked ugly cables with HUGE ends in them. They plugged into standard RCA jacks, converted to light and then converted back. Great care needed to be taken in their layout. These, thankfully, disappeared and theirs been a few Toslink style pieces over the years but not that many. I think the ODR system by Pioneer made the greatest use of it, having fibre optics from deck to amps, with the D/As right in the amps.

My server farm at work is all fiber based. And we have a fibre running between the 3 buildings we occupy. Also, our backbone is wired with fibre and cat 5, however, we only have a few switches that use the fibre inputs. Parts of my home theatre are also fiber based, but I almost prefer coax/rca to fiber, only for the cost effectiveness of it. Fibre is better for video transfer, or at least it seems to be in my system at home.
