Should I be using the "True RMS Voltage" or "Peak Voltage" setting on the Oscilloscope when using it to set gain voltage on headunits, amps, etc...
Can either be used? Does it make a difference one way on the other?
Thanks,
Hans

An O-scope should have a small TV on it so you can look at the waveform. Whether you tell it to read RMS or Peak is of little consequence. What you're after is setting a max level where the waveform is not clipped (a sine wave -> square wave).

"Trust your ears more then any piece of equipment" I don't know about that buddy, it may be too late when you can here your system going bad! trust me on that one! I rely on my fluke and o-scope but yes, a little clipping ain't that bad!

Do you mean subjectively? or on a mic?
Because it has been shown that you will perceive a distorted(soft clipped) signal as being louder - but I do not expect it to actually meter "louder"

How much of a clip are we talking about here? Not a complete flat line at the top of the wave crest, but more of a short line from peak to peak?

I would say your getting into a hard clip. The flatter the top, the harder your clipping!
