Should I be using the "True RMS Voltage" or "Peak Voltage" setting on the Oscilloscope when using it to set gain voltage on headunits, amps, etc...

Can either be used? Does it make a difference one way on the other?

Thanks,

Hans

An O-scope should have a small TV on it so you can look at the waveform. Whether you tell it to read RMS or Peak is of little consequence. What you're after is setting a max level where the waveform is not clipped (a sine wave -> square wave).

Even so....a soft clip is going to be a little louder then a perfect wave regardless

Do you mean subjectively? or on a mic?

Because it has been shown that you will perceive a distorted(soft clipped) signal as being louder - but I do not expect it to actually meter "louder"

a soft clip WILL meter louder.

Been proven a few times by a lot of different people.

I don't know why so I won't pretend to, but I do know its louder and thats what counts

How much of a clip are we talking about here? Not a complete flat line at the top of the wave crest, but more of a short line from peak to peak?
