Wondering if a higher (4v) output headunit will actually increase db's compaired to a 1.3 unit.
assuming gains are adjusted opimially.

i have to disagree to that, i went from a alpine 7894 to a balanced 16 volt eclipse 8053,and went up a tested 1.3 db, but that was 4 volt to 16, so that was a big difference

I've used a 4volt and 5volt and it didn't increase my score but it let me back the gains down some on my Amps with a stronger signal. [Cool]

I'm currently using a kenwood MP5028, an it gives 3.8 volts at Volume nob set to 35, and according to my osciloscope, there is no clipping at full volume.....It;s a great HU for the price to tell you guys the truth...

no, it is in parallel, lets say you have a 100 ohm output impedence with a 10k input impedence from the amp, then a 10k input impedence from the line driver and a 1k output impedence, the total circuit impedence will be less than 100ohm, not much, but it will be none the less.
