Okay so here is my dillema. I have an Orion Concept 97.2 and it is capable of converting a non-balanced input into a balanced output. My Treo SSX 75.4 amp is capable of running in balanced mode also.
Now here is my problem, the EQ outputs the balanced signal via mini XLR connector and the amp can only recieve via RCA, whether the signal is balanced or unbalanced.
Now I have been doing research into this situation for almost a month in my spare time so I am fairley educated on the subject. I know I can build a cable that has the XLR on one end and standard RCA on the other. I also understand that when an RCA carries a balanced signal the center pin carries the normal phase, the outer collar carries the inverted phase of the signal while the chassis ground of the amp will serve as the ground referance. On the other hand the XLR outputs both phases of signal and the ground referance in one connector.
So if I were to build a cable that is XLR on one end and RCA on the other, what do I do with the ground referance signal from the EQ?? The EQ does not output a balanced signal via RCA only via XLR, so that is out of the question. The other question I have is whther acheiving a balanced signal is really worth all of the hassel it will put me through??
I am willing to do it if it is worth it.
I have never heard the differance between the two so if you have experience with balanced signal please help me out.
Thanks,
Chris

The XLR cables for my Phoenix Gold amp are just as simple as making a networking cable it seems and the quality is supposed to be better. Cat5 is pennys per foot so its obviouslly less expansive. It can't hurt, but I would imagine its for noise? The cable itself can't realistically be any better, but the single provided by the output is. My 2 cents is, if you have system noise, and you still can't get rid of it, and you have a complicated stereo (aka running through EQ's, x-over's, and etc), XLR can reduce the chances for noise.
I know the most worthwhile investment i've made was dual 30 band 1/3rd octave EQ w/ 8v line driver next to 3-way 24dB x-over's. Giving you some real control over your system......
I've had 2 decks with 4v preamp's and a EQ with 7v line driver and a EQ with 8v line driver. The luck I have wiht the line driver / eq's are wicked. I think its the extra low ohm impedence it puts out to give it a stronger warmer single. Im thinking balanced is just a expansive pre-made cable way, or inexpensive do it yourself cable way to take extra steps to no-noise.
