i gotta go a few mods to a xbox that i wanna get and do...

basicaly heres the deal and what i wanna do....
i got a new dash for my truck with the air bag slot location... where i originaly have cup holders...
so even tho the air bag wont be used IT WAS NOT STOCK [Wink] so not needed thier [Big Grin]

now with the new dash im gonna be sanding it smooth and painting it to match my truck and i wanna mold the CD-ROM slot and power buttons into that air bag location.... and sand it all smooth to flow perfectly and painted all at once....

so to do that i HAVE to either pull the xbox all apart and stack it a different way OR the easiest way would be to simply extend the ON/RESET butons and the CD-ROM slot about 5-10ft. 10ft would easily be long enough so i could mount the Xbox full case either under the passenger seat OR even more outta the way would be under my false floor.

either way molding the CD-rom and power buttons into the air bag location with a custom mold for it to flow with the whole dash....
im sure this would be KILLER "IF" its posible to extend the wires.... which would definatly be the easiest thing to do! since restacking the internal parts would be preaty difficult!
im not exactly sure how much dept i have behind the air bag location until i get the old dash out [Frown]
and i wont know exactly how much until i find someone that has a airbag delete pocket or i put it in my truck [Frown] stupid cup holder dash!

also ill be buying a moddified/chip instaled new Xbox so i can put all my current games and dvds onto its harddrive [Wink]

it can be done, requires a lot of sottering/splicing skill, i think theres a ribbon cable in there that you simply have to cut and extend, then your done, i think matching and sottering is the hardest part. Have fun, but you might wanna go buy a cheap referb xbox and practice before cutting up a brand new one.

What i would do, if you get a new xbox for your car, MOD it... Go through and add a mod chip so you can save your games to it, the whole game, not just save points, and get a 250 or so gig H/D. Another thing you could do is extend controller ports. NOthing but USB cords

You cannot extend it that far. IDE should go no more than 3 feet and that is being liberal. You will run into issues for sure with a 10 foot cable. It is physically possible but it would be amazingly unreliable.

The longest premade IDE cable you are going to find is 3 feet. To do the custom ones you have to order a roll of the ribbon and then you put the ends on yourself, they go on like those scotch-lok connectors. Thy just pierce through the insulation in the cable.

ya ill check out the computer shop tomorow and ask them what they can do for me... i would think most harddrives are the same with the same cables...
then ill measure it exactly......
i hope i can get a cable easy enough.... if not ill have to change my idea.. i guess with a 3ft cable i could mount it to come out of the front of my middle console guess that would be preaty smooth as well and hidden as well if i mount it either under the seat or under the rears false floor... ill have to measure it all out tho and see where it will be able to fit and reach once i find out what length i can get it at...
tho ill have the cd-rom upgraded along with the harddrive as well to at least 150gigs! not sure on what mod chip to use tho.... ill try and get the best one they haveif its not to much more...

all the other cables are a snap! just plug in extensions for the controlers, dvd controler if i cannt play it without it.. not sure..

Mod chip... Xecuter 2 or SmartXX, best ones going IMO.

As for the xbox thing, you have those cupholders right and the airbag where you are thinking of installing them is behind those right? Personally I would just stick all the xbox crap in the glovebox.

The spot below the radio where the single CD slot normally is fits the drive perfectly as well if you wanna try that.

I know your troubles though, there is like no extra room whatsoever in those dashes.

18" for reliable data transmission on an IDE cable. The longer you get the less performance you will get. Hope this helps.

If you have a mod-chip you can control the DVD functions with a controller. I would suggest you going with wireless controllers [Smile]

I believe the Xbox is ATA 100...a 3' IDE cable would nearly cut the performance in half. Too bad Xbox isn't SATA then 3' would be fine.

All devices that use IDE...Good luck getting your PC-DVD to work in an Xbox (Can be done if you open it up and mod the internals and solder a new power connector).

You can buy modded Samsung DVD drives on ebay for about $130 and they are 16x which is nice although Xbox can only handle about 8x.

Xbox DVD drives run at 4x if you use an IDE cable longer than 18" or say 3' you would see your DVD drive running around 2X which is VERY slow.

My friend has the PC Samsung (modded to work in Xbox's) 16x and I have the Xbox stock Samsung drive and I see no speed difference, although his can read CDR's and DVD-RW, DVD+R's but for an extra $130 it is pointless if you have the stock Samsung DVD drive.

If you Xbox DVD drive looks like this then you have the Samsung
 -

 -
Thomson's are crap and have a hard time reading DVD-R's and they seem to break easier.

 -
Philips can read DVD-R but it is picky, so you have to find a brand of DVD-R's that work well, also lower performance than the Samsung at read speeds for DVD-R's.

If you are only using original copies of the games then you shouldn't have a problem with any of the above drives.

The Thompson drives are total crap. The only thing I can load anything into it is with some old ass cd-rw's and at that it works like half the time.

No sense is bothering with the power connector, just get a splitter and use the regular molex from the HDD. (not sure if it works, gotta try it)

I've an idea... is there any way you could hook up an external USB DVD ROM to the xbox, i know the controller ports can act as USB that might be able to work... Dunno?

ya ive thought about that... i can mod the xbox with USB ports but ive been thinking heavily and i might just mount the Xbox inside the glove box, cut a hole in the front off the console so it comes out the front for the cd slot. extenders for the controler ports and switch on the side under the front door... maybe ill have enough room to keep the controlers inside the middle console when not in use....

but im still thinken about spending the extra money for the USB extensions.... and put them in the dash... but with my console it doesnt have the cup holder or cd case holders in the console.... so i guess its still up in the air...... tho the console would definatly be the easiest way to go!
