CEA 2006 is a new system of conventions for the listing of amplifier specifications.

It stipulates output power response at 1% THD+N and 14.4v DC supply.

Also, there is some sort of modification of the damping factor spec, not sure what?

And, S/N ratio is given at 1w power output.

I wish I had a technical paper on it. Does "no more than 1% distortion" require that the amplifier exhibit <1% distortion at the test frequency, or all frequencies?

Global NFB is the typical distortion reduction mechanism in a solid state amplifier, and the global NFB factor decreases towards the dominant pole frequency, usually meaning that distortion goes up in the upper bandwidth of an amplifier. This may be up to up to a factor of ten, with some amplifiers! 1% at 1khz may mean 2, 5, 10% at 20khz.

Why the ambiguity for a "new" standard?

I would contact Rob Hephner or Navid Navone on Carsound about it. Personally while I can appreciate and understand your quite pertinent point, I am just overjoyed beyond words that if some guy is looking at radios while I happen to be on the Sales floor, I can grab a box and show him why a "200 watt" radio actually produces 17 watts for the first time, even though we have known this and tried in vain to educate customers for years. Heck, Wayne is a techie and has connections, maybe he has more details than we do about it.. Good luck-
Chris

There is some CEA literature online that you can read. I'm not sure where tho. Try their website.
