I asked a friend of mine which wud be louder, a 15 or two 12's. He said the two 12's wud hit harder b/c after one hits, the other follows it, and just a 15 wud knock by itself. Is this true and why?

Depends on which drivers you are using or comparing. A pair of 12's would feel like they hit harder because there is more cone area to move air vs. the 15" model.

it realy depends. i had 4 12inch audiobahn high excursion subs about fully powered before in sealed boxes. and my single 15inch brahma with about 1,200watts rms PUTS THEM TO SHAME in a ported box

Wow. I can't believe two people already responded and didn't address the completely ridiculous claim that subs "follow" each other.
Tell your friend he's doesn't know what he's talking about.
As far as what would be louder, just know this:
Loudness depends on how much air is being moved. How much air is being moved depends on the displacement capabilities of the sub setup. The displacement capabilities of the sub setup (specifically a sealed sub setup) depend on cone area and excursion. If there's a single 15" sub that can move more air than a pair of 12's, it can be louder. If there's a 10" sub that can move more air than a pair of 12's, it can be louder.

What do u mean move more air? like how much more room there is in the box that the sub sits in?

Think of a wave pool. The more the machine can move the water, the bigger the waves. This in a sense is the same for subwoofers. The more air they can displace (move) the louder it will get. The larger the fan...the more air it moves...etc, etc.. Get my point?
This of course depends on many factors including the box, type and brand of sub, power, etc..

it also depends on how much power you have going too the subs but as far as the claim of subs following eachother i dont quiet understand hahaha
1 12 is approx 78 ssq in in area where a 15 is approx 128 sq inches at least the orions but you take 2 12 and paralell them on the same power you have going to 1 15 they will have more surface area than a 15 hence being able too move more air 2 12s equals approx 156 sq inches that verses 128 from the 15

You don’t have to have a large sub in order to go louder. I can put 12" subs to shame with an 8".

how would one follow the other? They would hit at the same time. For SQ the 2 12" could be better, simply because you are putting the same amount of power through more subs. but its all about the enclosure and the type of subs.
Are we talking about subs from the same company and line of product? (Ex. all MA Audio Subs all in the XL line?) If so the 2 12" would be better because the stats are almost the same. Now if you are talking about say two pioneer subs too 1 15" Hard Core Ma Audio 15". Then I think the 15" would be a better choice.
But It all depends on the comparison of subs. Some 8" subs can put more SPL and move more Air then 15". But obviously they are from different companies and its not fair to compare them. They are completely different.

if the 12's hit at different times then the sound waves would be out of phase which would cause them to hit LESS harder...your friend is talking out of the wrong orifice
chris...your sig's a bit on the large side. email Sid Grice (that's his nick) and ask him the allowed dimensions. Just so ya know before he puts up another "sig size" post
