Here's my story, hopefully someone has some feedback/similar story with solutions/ideas...
In the fall I bought the Sony MEX5DI headunit (http://pix.crutchfield.com/products/2002/158/h158MEX5DiBig_1.jpeg) for $675 off E-bay, a brand new unopened stereo. I found out later that I needed an external amp which costed me more but the deal seemed like a steal. I should start first by saying that this headunit is really cool. It can display pictures, slideshows, animations with a 32,000 color screen. It has a memory stick slot to load pictures or mp3s. For the first couple of months this seemed like my best purchase...
Here's the Problem: In the past month or so, it's had trouble playing CDs. This ranges from all of the kinds: real cds/burned mixes/burned mp3 cds/old cds/new cds/old mixes, basically everything. The problem is that it will play a song for about 2 minutes (if I'm lucky) and then out of nowhere, STOP, pause for a few seconds, and then display the words "DISC ERROR". It is by far the most frustrating thing, especially with the weather nice now and I have my windows down playing my music loud and all of the sudden, dead silence. Every time it happens I want to just rip the headunit out of my dash and throw it in front of my car and proceed to run over it. I don't however, because this POS was so expensive.
The radio still works fine, so it is just the CD player. I've called the so-called Sony techs and here is their well thought out quick-fix, "Just push the reset button on the front of the faceplate." Yeah, great idea. All it does is reset my clock and continue to malfunction.
Does this sound like a dirty lens? Or something deeper and I should take my headunit out and send it in to the factory or wherever. I've been to Best Buy, Circuit City, and Tweeter only to find that they all just want to make some cash out of the deal by sending my stereo in for me and charging me for it.
Can someone please help me out? I do not know what to do.
Thanks in advance, Matt

Arg, I know what thats like. My Aiwa did just about the same thing. I would try a cd laser lense cleaner but I doubt that it would work. You will probably be forced to send the unit in for work though. So start searching for a cheapo used deck for a replacement while its gone. Who knows, you might get the joy of sending it back multiple times...

well try this also. push the reset buton..... realy funny. i had the cdx-m600 sony cd player and the cd player kept coming up with error codes if not playing for acouple seconds. i reset it about once evey 6 months or when needed and it still works fine! ive bought 4 of them total now for me and other friends. and i bought one where the guy said in the auction the cdplayer came up with a error code and was selling as-is. i got it for 86 bucks shiped. hooked it up and it played perfectly!!!!!! and the 3rd one i bought cd stoped playing and the face wouldnt close, pushed the reset buton and it worked again. and the 4th didnt have that problem yet. realy funny..... thier is something wrong on the insides but luckely just press the reset buton and hopefully it should work again. ive only had one serious problem where the internal amp friend because the power wire shorted out in back when sliding it back in its sleeve. hopefully thats all you need to do. and that cd player is preaty cool but i think id spend alittle more and get the one with the hard drive built in.
