A while ago I was at a car show and got the chance to peek inside a spl van. Now they didint have it cranked up at all, but this thing had the most impact Ive ever felt.

It appeared to be a ported wall. subs up higher and ports down low. Now the thing that got me thinking is, instead of the subs firing into the cabin, they were behind ports.... It looked simular to a 6th Order Bandpass box, but both ports were also mildly flared, and you could see the cone through the port, and the an area infront of the cone had very minimal airspace and LARGE ports... so I dont see how that would tune it in the useable spl range (was an spl car after all)....

I have two theories (man I wish I just asked them).
It either is a regularly ported box, and they are using the "ports" infront of the cones to act like a horn, not being a real horn setup, but maybe just boosting some of the higher freqs? The "ports" couldint have been more than 12" deep...

Or, its really just a plain 6th order bandpass box, but why flare ports?

I dont have allot of experience with bandpass boxes, but I know that a properly designed one can sound great....

WHAT causes the "impact"? The kind that just hits you in the chest hard, Ive felt it it in single sub setups, and Ive felt it in setups like this spl van (think it was 4 15"s).

When I think of how I want my music, that's what I immediately think, Im happy with the amount I have, It's more than most cars Ive sat in, but I would love to be able to design a box that would make it severe!

I dont know if it's what you'd look for in a SQ system, but I want to boost it anyways! when I play some rock and the bass really hits It looks like my sideview mirror is about to bounce off, but I want that, not my damd mirror

I dont have any sound deadener except on the rear hatch, but There's no way deadening would create THAT much impact!
I am tuned pretty low(26hz), but tuned high it's still not close to what this van was!

so does anyone have a technical reason for it?

If need be I'll get 3 more 15"s, and 4400 more watts(well, atleast 1600 ), but Im convinced I can do it with ONE or two 15"s!

In a few months Im upgrading to another 15" so Im trying to start thinking box designs

sorry about the rant!!

thanks for the input!
